The port of Piraeus is located just 12 km south of the center of Athens and is its main port. Historically this port was the starting point for many naval expeditions and the Athenian navy fleet was also based here. Over the centuries, with the decline of Athens the port of Piraeus also declined and then resumed some activities in the nineteenth century. The Island of Spetses was called Pityoussa in ancient times; it is located in the Argosaronic Gulf, very close to the Peloponnese and is a very small island, rich in historical and cultural heritage.
