The port of Piraeus is located just 12 km south of the center of Athens and is its main port. Historically this port was the starting point for many naval expeditions and the Athenian navy fleet was also based here. Souvala is a small town on the island of Aegina, it is situated on the north coast and has a crescent shaped harbour area with fishing boats moored. Souvala is the second ferry port for the island of Aegina and its name was derived from the man-made underground water tanks and ancient cisterns found in the rocks in nearby Loutra.
