Situated on the southern coast of Spain, Valencia is a port city full art, science, nature and history.
A brief history
The Romans founded it Valencia and named it Valentia Edetanorum - it was an important city for the Edetani who lived here. Then the Moors gave it the name Balansiya, which over time became Valencia. After the Roman Empire, the city was conquered by the Visigoths, who gave it to the Arabs. The Arabs and Berbers colonised the population to absorb their customs, traditions, language and religion. The appearance of the city changed a lot too, the Rusàfa palace was built along with others and the Arabs began cultivation outside the city walls.
The Visigothic era saw the city become the governor's residence, as appointed by the Caliphate of Cordoba. Then the kingdom of Valencia was born under King James I of Aragon, his reign lasted until the 15th century, when Valencia was at the height of cultural and economic splendour. So much so, that it was named the Valencian golden century.
Places to visit
Among the places of interest we recommend visiting is the Lonja de la Seda - an old Silk Exchange where merchant bargains were held, it is one of the oldest markets in Europe. This Gothic-style building is now a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Do not miss the District of Carmen, an ancient quarter that developed a Muslim and a Christian community on either side of the city walls. In this area, you can walk through the alleys and narrow streets to admire medieval-style buildings.
Torres de Serranos, Torres de Quart, the Cathedral and the Basilica, the Plaza de Torso that dates back to the mid-1800s. There is the Town Hall and some more modern buildings located in the Ciutat de les arts i les Cìencies, for example, the Hemisfèric, that was designed by the Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava.
