Guide of Formentera

Formentera is the smallest of the Balearics and is a Mediterranean island with paradise beaches and a landscape of light and colour.

History

The first settlements on the island date back to the Bronze Age, a period dating back to the Ca Na Costa funeral complex, which came to light in the 70s provides evidence of the first men in Formentera. For a long time, the island was abandoned but was later conquered by Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans and Visigoths. But it was only under the Spanish-Arab dominion during the eleventh century that the island began to see some economic and social development. Important steps were make to make the island habitable through the construction of wells, buildings, cisterns etc. It remained an island rarely visited and was only inhabited sporadically by people coming from neighbouring Ibiza, until 1695 when it is annexed to the Island of Ibiza. Its economic boom was due to tourism in the sixties and seventies when the island became a perfect tourist destination for those who love relaxation and the beautiful sea.

Places to see

The village of San Francesc Xavier de Formentera is centred on its church, this is an important religious building because it was the first to be built on the island and served as a fortress to counter the pirate raids. Do not miss a visit to the Saline, a reserve that was created during the crystallization period, it offers beautiful views. The natural landscape on this island should be explored and there are some great walking and trecking routes, including Camì Vell de la Mola, which is about 3 kilometres.

Beaches

The most popular beaches are Illetes and Llevant, they have white sand and an unforgettable crystalline sea and there are beach services are of all kinds. For those looking for a little relaxation and wild nature can choose between Cala Sahona and Migjorn, which is more isolated and free. These beaches have no services, just transparent waters.
