Guide of Vulcano

Vulcano is one of the Sicilian islands of the Aeolian archipelago. Since ancient times it has always been famous for volcanic activity, but it was not inhabited. The name Vulcano derives from the name that the Romans gave to the god Vulcan, and it is from here that the terms volcano and vulcanism derive. The last major eruption occurred in 1888, the crater became inactive, and the area began to be cultivated. The presence of the volcano is still evident from the fumaroles, jet streams, submarines and sulphurous mud, which is said to have therapeutic properties. Since Roman times the island has been mined for sulphur.

Places to visit

The island of Vulcano is known for its black sand beaches and the transparent seawater acts as a mirror to the small black lava stones, which look like crystals under the sun's rays. A great thing to do on the island is taking a hike up to the crater, along a path which goes along the side of the mountain and has fantastic views of the whole archipelago. The smell of sulphur intensifies along the journey and the red earth underfoot makes you feel as if you are walking on another planet. When you arrive at the top of the Crater of the Fossa it is an unforgettable sight. Another place to visit in Vulcanello is the ‘Valley of the Monsters’so called because after sunset, at twilight, the rocks and shadows create shapes that look like animals, figures and monsters!
