Guide of Agnontas (Skopelos)

Agnontas is situated on the southern coast of the island of Skopelos, in a small sheltered cove that serves as the island's second port for ferries and hydrofoils.

A brief history of Agnontas

This characteristic seaside town owes its name to Agnontas, the champion of the ancient Olympic Games in 569.  Agnontas was born on the island of Skopelos and when he returned to his homeland, his ship landed on the shores of the area that his countrymen called Agnontas, in his honour.

Places to visit in Agnontas

The town of Agnontas is renowned for its beaches and it is a popular tourist destination for those looking for sun, sea and relaxation. In its little streets and squares, there are many taverns, restaurants, cafes and bars where you can find excellent Greek food.

The 2007 film "Mamma Mia!" was filmed just one kilometre outside the centre of Agnontas - you can even go and visit the set. Another breathtaking place, linked to the legend of the Dragon of Skopelos is around two kilometres away. It is said that in the fourth century the inhabitants of Skopelos faced an angry dragon that was destroying crops and killing the local people. So Saint Reginos decided to find and kill the beast, he wandered around looking for it for days until he found the dragon in a place that today is known as Dragon Reef.  The dragon was so scared that he threw himself from the rocks ending up dead in the water. Today Dragon Reef is beautiful and peaceful, the water is transparent and the beach is surrounded by fragrant vegetation and breathtaking views.
