Agistri is in the Saronic Gulf, located between Peloponenso and Aegina, not far from Athens. This makes Agistri the perfect destination for short excursions departing from Piraeus. There is wonderfully clean sea around the island with beautiful beaches and a beautiful landscape.
Places to visit
The island of Agistri has some nice villages, including Megalachori which is the main center of the island and has a nice little beach next to the port. The name Megalachori means 'big village', although it is a small place with a maze of little alleys and small streets typical of Greece.
Skala, is a another village located on the north-eastern coast and is the main tourist hub that connects directly with Piraeus. There is lots of accommodation here and a good beach, which takes its name from the town itself. The beach has fine sand and a clear, shallow sea along with many amenities that make it an ideal destination for families.
Limenaria is another village that is suited to tourists who want to experience the traditional Greek atmosphere, where you can enjoy the characteristic Greek architecture and gastronomy. According to Homer, Agistri was originally called Kekrifalia and was an ally of Aegina during the Trojan War. Today there are many archaeological sites from that time, including Kadoudi, Megaritsa and Kodari. There are lots of artifacts from antiquity to be discovered throughout the island - even on the sea floor. The findings at the Cultural Center in Megalochori suggest that the island has been inhabited since at least the 5th century BC by the Peloponnese people. There are many churches to visit all over the island, including Agioi Anargiroi which rises majestically to the white town of Skala, with its characteristic blue domes.
Beaches
Chalikiada, Aponissos and Dragonera are some beaches not to be missed!
