A nuraghe is a cone-shaped stone building that is typically found on Sardinia.  They are the main type of ancient megalithic edifice found on the island and date back to the 2nd Millennium B.C. They served as homes and had various rooms for cooking and sleeping. Today, the nuraghi are one of Sardinia’s cultural symbols and proof of the Nuragic civilization, the most advanced of any civilization in the western Mediterranean at the time.

The ancient nuraghi in Su Mulinu are surrounded by typical Sardinian vegetation and on a hill so there are breathtaking views from here. There is a strange, almost magical atmosphere here and this location has played host to rituals and sacrifices to the gods and nature. The ancient sandstone altar tank that was used as a container for the gifts to the gods can still be found in Su Mulinu.

Another site not to be missed is Su Nuraxi, which dates back to the Bronze Age, the buildings here are still shrouded in mystery, as archaeologists are still not sure what they were used for. There are those who think that they were used for war, others say they were used for religious purposes, then there are those who think that nuraghi were used for astronomical purposes.

Pozzo Sacro di Santa Cristina is another prehistoric site not to be missed. It is a mystical place with an unusual shape and structure. It is an underground construction that dates back to prehistoric times, built as a water sanctuary for a cult who worship water. It is said that during certain periods of the year the moon would be reflected in the well and so it is believed that the well was used as an astronomical instrument.
